Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic bungalow flooded after Mumbai’s heavy rains

Mumbai’s relentless monsoon rains have left the city reeling under severe waterlogging, and even the homes of Bollywood’s most prominent stars have not been spared. Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic Juhu bungalow Prateeksha, recently gifted to his daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda, was hit by significant flooding this week, with viral videos on social media showing water accumulating up to ankle level inside and outside the property.

Eyewitness videos show rainwater streaming into the premises and pooling around parked cars, leaving the bungalow partially submerged and the surrounding street impassable for vehicles. One viral clip captured a local resident remarking that neither extreme wealth nor celebrity status offers protection when the city’s drainage fails to cope with torrential monsoon downpours. The person claimed that Amitabh Bachchan himself was seen wielding a wiper in an attempt to clear the water from the property.

Prateeksha, spread over 17,000 square feet and estimated to be valued at more than Rs 50 crore, is famous as the Bachchan family’s first Mumbai home. Both Shweta and Abhishek Bachchan were born there, and it has long held sentimental value, with the name selected by Amitabh’s father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Along with Prateeksha, the actor also owns other bungalows in Juhu, namely Jalsa and Janak, which are reported to have also experienced waterlogging, though details remain limited.

The recent flooding came as Mumbai experienced some of the heaviest rainfall of the year, with the Indian Meteorological Department issuing a red alert and widespread disruption reported across the metropolis. City officials have confirmed waterlogged streets and stranded vehicles in several upmarket neighbourhoods, as well as in the areas surrounding celebrity homes, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of monsoon woes in Mumbai.

Social media reactions to the video clips have ranged from expressions of sympathy for residents—including celebrities—grappling with the city’s chronic flooding, to criticism about poor civic planning and the city’s inadequate stormwater drainage infrastructure. Experts have reiterated the call for urgent upgrades to Mumbai’s infrastructure as the city faces ever more extreme monsoon events.
