Audience favours ‘Superman’ as Monday box office test weakens Bollywood releases

The much-anticipated box office results for ‘Maalik’, ‘Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan’ and ‘Superman’ after their first Monday have been revealed, reflecting a contrasting picture for each release during the crucial weekday test.

Superman remains the strongest performer, continuing its dominance at the Indian box office. After a robust weekend haul, the superhero film experienced a notable drop on Monday. Despite the decrease, the cumulative total stands impressively, securing its position ahead of homegrown competitors and maintaining healthy weekday interest among audiences familiar with the franchise. The bulk of collections continues to come from the English version, with dubbed adaptations also contributing to overall numbers.

‘Maalik’, starring Rajkummar Rao, presented a clear case of a significant Monday dip. The drop is in line with expectations for weekday performance, but signals that strong word-of-mouth will be necessary if the film has to keep afloat in cinemas.

‘Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan’, despite generating some pre-release conversation due to Shanaya Kapoor’s debut along with the 12th Fail film-wonder Vikrant Massey, struggled considerably from the outset and failed to gain momentum over its opening weekend.

Among the three, only ‘Superman’ can be said to have cleared the Monday test convincingly, benefitting from a loyal fan base and ongoing multiplex traction. ‘Maalik’ faced the widely observed weekday downturn, making its long-term fate dependent on sustained interest and limited drop in further earnings. ‘Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan’, meanwhile, failed to withstand Monday’s challenge, showing little sign of recovery as the week progresses.
