India Superhit Awards focuses on music based on streaming data

JioSaavn, one of India’s leading audio streaming platforms with over 100 million monthly active users, has announced the launch of the inaugural India Superhit Awards. This new initiative stands out as the country’s first music awards programme to be based entirely on listener streaming data, rather than traditional voting or jury-based selections.

The India Superhit Awards aim to provide an authentic reflection of what the nation is actually listening to, drawing exclusively from JioSaavn’s platform-wide streaming and engagement metrics. The awards consider recordings and compositions released and streamed between 1 January and 31 December 2024. By moving away from subjective voting and jury panels, JioSaavn seeks to showcase music that has genuinely captivated listeners across the country.

For its first edition, the awards recognised top tracks and artists across ten of India’s most popular languages: Hindi, English, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Bhojpuri, Bengali, and Marathi. Five main categories were awarded in each language: Most Streamed Song, Most Streamed Female Artist, Most Streamed Male Artist, Most Streamed Lyricist, and Most Streamed Composer.

Among the notable winners, Arijit Singh was named Most Streamed Male Artist in multiple language categories, including Hindi, Bengali, and Telugu, while Madhubanti Bagchi was recognised as Most Streamed Female Artist in Hindi for her songs “Aaj Ki Raat” and “Peelings”. Sanju Rathod and Sai Abhyankkar were also among the top awardees in Marathi and Tamil categories, respectively.

Other prominent winners included Shilpa Rao for Telugu, Sonali Sonawane for Marathi, and Sabrina Carpenter and Hanumankind for English. The Most Streamed Song awards went to tracks such as “Aaj Ki Raat” (Hindi), “Espresso” (English), “Ve Haaniyaan” (Punjabi), “Gulabi Sadi” (Marathi), and “Katchi Sera” (Tamil).

Lyricists like Amitabh Bhattacharya, Ramajogayya Sastry, V. Nagendra Prasad, and Anupam Roy were honoured for their work across different languages. Composers such as Sachin-Jigar, Anirudh Ravichander, Om Jha, and Arjun Janya were also celebrated for their contributions.

JioSaavn’s spokesperson stated that the India Superhit Awards are designed to set a new benchmark in recognising both established and emerging musical talent, ensuring that artists are celebrated based on what the country is truly listening to. The company has also launched a comprehensive marketing campaign to support the awards, with plans to make it an annual celebration of India’s diverse and evolving music scene.

There was no on-ground ceremony for this edition, but the awards mark a significant shift towards data-driven recognition in the Indian music industry.
